Dua Istikhara With Urdu Translation: Meaning, Method, and Etiquette
Facing a major life decision, like a marriage proposal or job offer, can bring a great deal of uncertainty. In Islam, there is a beautiful way to seek Allah’s direct guidance and turn that uncertainty into peace: the Istikhara prayer.
The word ‘Istikhara’ in Arabic literally means “to seek goodness.” This special prayer is not about predicting the future or waiting for a specific dream. Instead, it’s a supplication where you ask Allah, the best of planners, to guide you toward the choice that is best for you in this life and the hereafter. This guide explains the method, the dua, and how to understand the guidance that follows.
Prerequisites for Istikhara
Before asking for guidance, you must prepare to receive it. There are three simple prerequisites:
- Perform Wudu: You must be in a state of physical purity, which is achieved by performing Wudu (ritual ablution) as you would before any formal prayer.
- Have a Sincere Niyat (Intention): In your heart, you must have a clear and sincere intention that you are praying two units of prayer specifically for Salatul Istikhara to seek Allah’s guidance.
- A Permissible Choice: Istikhara is for situations where you face a genuine and permissible choice, such as deciding between two job offers or choosing a spouse. It is not for matters that are already religiously required (fard) or forbidden (haram).
How to Perform Salatul Istikhara: A Step-by-Step Guide
The process taught by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is straightforward. Salatul Istikhara consists of a two-unit voluntary prayer followed by a special supplication.
- Ensure you have your Niyat (intention) and are in a state of purity from Wudu.
- Pray two Rakat of Nafl (voluntary) prayer. It is recommended to recite Surah Al-Kafirun (Chapter 109) in the first Rakat and Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112) in the second, after Surah Al-Fatiha.
- After saying the final salams to conclude the prayer, raise your hands and recite the Dua of Istikhara with humility and focus.
The Complete Dua Istikhara: Arabic, Transliteration, and Translation
After completing the two Rakat prayer, it is time to recite the beautiful supplication at the heart of this process. This is the moment you turn to Allah, expressing your uncertainty and asking for His divine guidance.

Transliteration:
Note: When reciting, replace “hadha al-amra” (this matter) with the specific decision you are making.
English Translation:
O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. For You have power, and I have none. And You know, and I do not. And You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the consequences of my affairs (or in my immediate and future affairs), then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and then bless me in it. But if you know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the consequences of my affairs (or in my immediate and future affairs), then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good, wherever it may be, and then make me content with it.
Understanding the Guidance After Istikhara
A common misconception is that you must receive a specific dream as a sign. While a dream can be from Allah, it is not the only or most common way guidance comes. Focusing only on dreams may cause unnecessary anxiety.
More often, the answer is a feeling that develops in your heart. You might find yourself feeling a natural inclination and sense of peace toward one option, or a feeling of aversion and internal resistance to another. This sense of ease or unease is a primary sign.
Allah also provides clarity through your circumstances. For the path that is best, you may notice that obstacles are removed and things begin to fall into place. For the path not meant for you, new difficulties may arise, making it harder to proceed.
If you still feel confused, it is an opportunity to use another powerful tool: Mashwara (consultation). Istikhara is asking for guidance from Allah, while Mashwara is gathering wisdom from His creation. Consult with knowledgeable and trustworthy family, elders, or mentors. Combining divine guidance with human wisdom provides the most comprehensive view.
It is permissible to perform Istikhara again on subsequent days until your heart finds direction. The person facing the decision must perform the prayer for themselves.
Conclusion: Making Your Decision with Trust
The true benefit of Istikhara is the internal shift from anxiety to Tawakkul—complete trust in Allah’s plan. After praying and seeking counsel, you can move forward with a peaceful heart. With your trust placed in Him, you can be confident that whichever path unfolds is the good that Allah has chosen for you.
