Join channelA distracted lesson is rarely a discipline problem. Usually something about the setup made attention hard, and the child was blamed for it. The good news is that most of this is fixed before the lesson begins, not during it.
Where the lesson happens matters more than most parents expect:
Headphones with a microphone help enormously. They remove echo, which is the most common reason a teacher keeps asking a child to repeat.
If the tablet is also the games device, attention will drift towards the games. Where you can, use one device for lessons and close everything else before the lesson starts. Turning off notifications for the lesson’s duration is worth more than any amount of reminding.
For children under about eight, sitting within sight for the first few lessons helps them settle. After that, move gradually further away. Staying in the room for a nine-year-old usually makes things worse: the child performs for the parent instead of listening to the teacher.
What older children need is not supervision but presence — knowing that somebody will ask afterwards what they learned.
Five minutes before the lesson, do the same three things every time:
A predictable run-up tells a child’s brain that the lesson is starting. Without it, the first five minutes of every lesson are spent arriving.
Every child has off days. If your child loses focus mid-lesson:
If a child is consistently restless at a particular time, that is information about the timetable, not about the child. A slot straight after school is much harder than one after a break and a snack.
Do not sit in and answer for them. It feels helpful and it removes the child’s reason to speak.
Do not treat the lesson as free time. Children notice immediately when a lesson is treated as optional, and they match that attitude.
Do not ask “did you do well?” Ask “what did you read today?” One question invites a report, the other invites a verdict.
If you are choosing a time for your child’s lessons, tell us when they are usually at their best rather than when they are free. You can book a free trial class and the office will match the slot to the teacher.
