Course Overview

This course covers the geometry chapters of Grade 10 mathematics in depth: similar figures, the projection of a side of a triangle, and the full set of circle theorems covering chords, tangents, arcs and the angle in a segment, together with the practical geometry of circles.

What You Will Learn

  • Similar figures and the conditions for similarity
  • Projection of a side of a triangle
  • Chords of a circle and their properties
  • Tangent to a circle and the tangent theorems
  • Chords and arcs
  • Angle in a segment of a circle
  • Practical geometry of circles
  • Combined circle theorems and their proofs

Grade 10 geometry is almost entirely about the circle, and about a set of theorems that are examined in combination rather than one at a time. A typical past-paper question presents a single figure in which three theorems apply, and the student has to notice which one to use at each step. Recognising that is a skill built by working through many figures, not by rereading the theorems.

Similarity is the other theme. Students learn to justify why two triangles are similar before using the ratio of their sides, because the marks are attached to the justification.

As in Grade 9, the presentation carries marks. We insist on the standard proof format and on clear, accurately drawn figures, since a badly drawn figure hides the very relationship the question is about.
