Course Overview

Grade 10 mathematics completes the algebra begun in Grade 9 and introduces trigonometry and formal circle geometry. It covers quadratic equations and their theory, variations, partial fractions, sets and functions, basic statistics, and the trigonometry and circle theorems that Grade 11 builds directly upon.

What You Will Learn

  • Quadratic equations
  • Theory of quadratic equations, roots and discriminants
  • Variations: direct, inverse and joint
  • Partial fractions
  • Sets and functions
  • Basic statistics: mean, median, mode and standard deviation
  • Introduction to trigonometry and the ratios
  • Trigonometric identities
  • Projection of a side of a triangle
  • Chords of a circle
  • Tangent to a circle
  • Chords and arcs
  • Angle in a segment of a circle
  • Practical geometry of circles

Quadratic equations are the centre of Grade 10 mathematics. Three methods โ€” factorisation, completing the square and the formula โ€” are taught, and students learn to choose between them rather than using one for everything. The discriminant is treated as a question about the graph, not as a formula to substitute, which makes the theory chapter far easier to remember.

Trigonometry is introduced carefully because it reappears for the next three years. We begin with the ratios in a right-angled triangle and with the standard angles, and only move on to identities once those are secure. Students who rush to the identities without the ratios struggle all year.

Circle geometry closes the book and is the most demanding reasoning of the year. Every theorem is proved in the standard format, and each is applied to past-paper questions that combine two or three theorems in one figure.
